The Charm of Palais-Royal: Where Art and Architecture Merge

Palais-Royal is a historic complex originally built as a royal residence.
It is a space where art and architecture merge—known as one of the quiet, refined photo spots in Paris.

What Makes Palais-Royal Special?
The courtyard with its iconic striped columns is connected to elegant arcades and gardens, making it a particularly special place for photographers and filmmakers.
The beautiful arcades and gardens built in the 17th and 18th centuries symbolize the elegance of Paris through their historical value and architectural beauty. They bring a dignified atmosphere to films shot here.
Scenes from Mission: Impossible, *Emily in Paris*, and *Amélie*, among many others, were filmed here.

As I photographed the space, I reflected on why it is so visually compelling.
Perhaps because:
● The geometric elements—water surfaces, reflections, cobblestones, and columns—create strong contrasts of light that are visually striking.
● It allows expression of both stillness and movement; human motion blends naturally with the stillness of architecture.
These are some of Eryck’s past photographs taken here.
All of them showcase beautiful symmetry, strong contrasts between light and shadow, and refined forms.
He once described it as:
“A place where architecture and solitude, in dialogue between light and shadow, transform into a unique beauty.”

The Arcades of Palais-Royal (Galerie de Valois)
The photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson shot here frequently. The arcades are known for their balanced colonnades and rhythmic light.
Within the linear architectural structure, natural light filtering through the arches creates subtle fluctuations, and shadows cast on the floor generate a dynamic rhythm. This interplay allows photographers to create images with narrative depth.
That is likely why black-and-white photography works so beautifully here.

This time I only brought my GF5. Because of cataracts, I had difficulty seeing the LCD monitor clearly, and camera shake became noticeable. I couldn’t fully concentrate.
Next time, I would like to return with a better lens and a tripod and photograph the space more carefully.
