Comment photographier et explorer Montmartre

The Stairs of Montmartre Are Photogenic

For art lovers and photography enthusiasts, Montmartre is a must-visit. Once a village of artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, Utrillo, and Toulouse-Lautrec, Montmartre has long been a gathering place for creative minds.
Place du Tertre still preserves that tradition today and is often described as “the square where you can feel art the most in Paris.”

Before you get there, however, I should mention how steep the stairs can be.

Rue Foyatier, famous for film locations, has more than 220 steps. To be precise, it consists of 222 steps with a vertical rise of 36 meters.
The staircase is 100 meters long and 12 meters wide. If we calculate:
36 meters ÷ 222 steps = approximately 16.2 cm per step (estimated).

This is within the standard range for step height. However, because the staircase stretches for 100 meters and 222 steps, the accumulated incline feels quite steep.

If you rush to the top in one go just to avoid looking weak, you may find yourself too exhausted to do anything once you arrive. Please be careful.

That’s not the only reason, but I chose a different staircase—the one near the Wall of Love, likely on Rue Maurice Utrillo.
There are many other stairways in Montmartre, and all of them are photogenic.

In a slightly “enthusiast” style, I’ve summarized the stairs below.

Photo Spots and Recommended Route

Here is my personal recommended walking route:

① Take a commemorative photo at the very famous “Le Mur des Je t’aime” (The Wall of Love).
(Couples often point to “I love you” written in their favorite language and take photos of each other.)

② Climb the stairs of Rue Maurice Utrillo. Take short breaks along the way, photographing the graffiti on the walls.

③ Arrive at Place du Tertre and enjoy taking photos for a while.

④ From the square in front of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, walk straight south along the main street. At the viewpoint overlooking central Paris, stop for a few photos.

⑤ Walk around and photograph the Sacré-Cœur Basilica from the park side.

⑥ Move to the front terrace and take more photos. Enjoy the panoramic view of Paris together with many other visitors.

⑦ Walk down the stairs of Rue de Steinkerque and continue for a while. If you are interested, explore the fabric market street and have a little fun browsing textiles.
